WHO ARE WE?

The Catalan Publishers Association is a professional association of companies publishing works in Catalan.

It was founded on 2nd June 1978 by a group of Catalan publishers who right from the beginning received the support of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. As democracy had recently been achieved in Spain and after the Constitution and Autonomous Statute came into force, very special attention was required for publishing in Catalan, which had directly undergone very negative effects during the dictatorship.

In fact, recovering and standardising the language has become one of the main aims of the Autonomous Government and this recovery and standardisation of the written language directly depends on the attention paid to publishing carried out in Catalan.

In addition to the difficulties themselves in publishing any language of a restricted demographic scope, in the case of Catalan, the co-existence and competition in the same territory of a language so strong and widespread as Castillian Spanish has also been added to this process of recuperation and standardisation.

WHO ARE ITS MEMBERS?

Publishers, individuals or private companies may join the association as full members, providing they fulfil the following requirements:

  1. At least 30% of their catalogue is in Catalan.
